This collection of studies brings together fifteen essays dedicated to Dr Jonathan Shepard (Cambridge) by his colleagues and followers, mostly focusing on the “barbarian” northern fringes of the Byzantine world. These contributions examine real and false barbarians in the Byzantine service, Byzantium’s northern policy, as well as its political and cultural influence in England, Scandinavia and Rus’.
