[fr]Selon des modalités très différentes et variant considérablement dans le temps, les royaumes de Nubie et d’Éthiopie relevaient de l’autorité du patriarcat anti-chalcédonien d’Alexandrie. Une communauté de personnes, de statuts ecclésiastiques et sociaux unit l’Égypte, la Nubie et l’Éthiopie, des circulations de membres du clergé et de leur suite, ou d’ambassades visant à peser dans les nominations ou consécrations entre ces royaumes chrétiens et l’Égypte. Le nombre et la distribution des évêques et des évêchés ont évolué dans le temps, et leurs histoires respectives sont inégalement documentées. En conviant à un atelier de travail des chercheurs de trois horizons, qui s’intéressent à l’histoire du patriarcat d’Alexandrie ou à celle des évêques en Nubie et en Éthiopie, l’ambition est d’ouvrir un dialogue entre ces champs d’études. Il s’agit de tirer profit du dynamisme actuel des travaux sur le patriarcat d’Alexandrie, du fait de la préparation d’une nouvelle édition de l’Histoire des Patriarches d’Alexandrie ou de la découverte récente d’une Histoire de l’Épiscopat d’Alexandrie de la fin du IVe siècle, traduite en ge’ez à l’époque aksumite ; d’exploiter les nouvelles pistes offertes par la documentation en arabe conservée en Égypte et encore sous-exploitée pour les royaumes de Nubie et d’Égypte ou les travaux archéologiques en Nubie et en Éthiopie mettant au jour des sièges épiscopaux, ou encore la riche documentation épigraphique et documentaire nubienne.

The kingdoms of Nubia and Ethiopia were under the authority of the anti-chalcedonian Patriarchate of Alexandria, in a variety of configurations and with changes over time. A community of persons, sharing the same ecclesiastical and social status, unites Egypt, Nubia and Ethiopia. Between these three regions, members of the clergy and their followers or embassies circulate to weigh in on appointments or consecrations. Number and distribution of bishops and bishoprics in these three regions may have varied over time. Their respective history is unevenly documented. By inviting researchers from different fields and disciplines to a workshop on the question of bishops and bishoprics in Egypt, Nubia and Ethiopia, the aim is to open a dialogue between these areas of study. This workshop wishes to benefit from the current dynamism of the research on the Patriarchate of Alexandria. This is also a good momentum to explore new perspectives offered by the recent focus on documents composed in Arabic and preserved in Egypt, as well as for the nascent field of Arabic studies in the kingdoms of Nubia and Ethiopia. Special focus should be given to the ongoing archaeological works in Nubia and Ethiopia uncovering episcopal sees and painting a clearer picture of their ecclesiastical polities. Finally, the rich epigraphic and documentary evidence from Christian Nubia may throw light to the wider region.
