Madain Salih est l’un des sites archéologiques majeurs du royaume d’Arabie saoudite. Situé à 300 km au nord-ouest de Medine, dans le Ḥijāz, il correspond à la ville nabatéenne et romaine d’Hégra qui a prospérée sur les marges méridionales du royaume nabatéen et de l’empire romain, du premier siècle avant notre ère au troisième siècle après J.-C.
Un projet conjoint franco-saoudien a entrepris des fouilles sur le site depuis 2008. Les résultats les plus importants de ces fouilles seront présentés à l’occasion de cette conférence.
Ils incluent une restitution complète des rituels funéraires nabatéens reposant sur le matériau unique découvert dans les tombes fouillées, la découverte du fort le plus au sud de la période romaine et un grand sanctuaire nabatéen.

Madain Salih is one of the major archaeological sites in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Located 300 km northwest of Medina, in the Ḥijāz, it corresponds to Nabataean and Roman Hegra and it flourished, on the southern margins of the Nabataean kingdom and the Roman Empire, from the first century BC to the third century AD. A joint Saudi-French project has been undertaking excavations at the site since 2008. The most important results of these excavations will be presented on the occasion of this lecture. They include a complete restitution of the Nabataean funerary rituals based on the unique material discovered in the excavated tombs, the discovery of the southernmost fort of the Roman period and a large Nabataean sanctuary.
